Alum, Class of 2016
What is your school day like? What is your favorite part of the day?
A school day consists of four classes in the morning and two in the afternoon. SOF is a very busy school. In between classes there are students flooding the halls on the way to their classes. My favorite part of the day is either my art or history class, in both of these classes freshman year I had exceptional teachers.
What makes the School of the Future experience different from others you’ve had?
SOF is unlike any other school out there. The learning environment makes it possible for the student to reach their full potential by pushing them to do their best but also offering support when needed. The school is very small, which some may not like, but with a smaller community the grade can become a family, something that is usually an impossibility in new york city high schools. At SOF this is a wonderful reality.
What other activities/programs (at SOF or outside of the school) are you involved with?
I am in the photography club, and plan to join the SOF moth in the coming year. Outside of school of school I take art classes at Parsons and over the summer I went to NYSSSA, an art program in Fredonia NY for the month of July.
What do friends and others ask you about SOF? What do you tell them?
Usually the first question I get when I tell people that I go to SOF, “is that a spaceship?” Which I then assure them it most certainly not. The name is very apt because SOF prepares us for our futures in the modern world. I go on to say that I love SOF, the small community allows for great communication between the students and teachers. I tell them that we’re not a test based school, that the goal in mind is greater understanding rather than a number on a sheet of paper.
What do you want to do when you graduate SOF?
Once I graduate from SOF I’m pretty certain I’ll go into the arts. I’d like to go to an arts or liberal arts university. After this there are a few things fields that I’d like to pursue; architecture, printmaking, or becoming involved in the art community as a working artist. I’m very passionate on self expression through art, I paint, constantly take photos and recently have been learning printmaking. Art and creating are what I love to do.
