1. SchoolFood Summer Apprenticeship Program
Application Deadline: February 15, 2019
The NYCDOE Office of Food and Nutrition Services is offering the Summer Apprenticeship Program for high school students to support the Summer Meals Programs. Participating students will acquire knowledge about culinary career paths, food service operations, and culinary arts related to preparing meals for the largest school system in the country. Participating students will earn minimum wage for the duration of the program. Please note, candidates must not be attending summer school during the day in order to be eligible for this position. 2. Princeton University Summer Journalism Program
Application Deadline: February 15, 2019
The Princeton Summer Journalism Program (PSJP) is a free journalism and college preparatory program for high school juniors from low-income backgrounds. During the intensive residential 10-day summer program, students will engage in workshops, lectures, and activities led by Princeton professors, professional journalists, and PSJP alumni. Activities culminate in the publication of the student-produced newspaper, the Princeton Summer Journal. During the students’ senior year of high school, they will be matched with a volunteer college counselor who is a professional journalist or program alum to help with the college application process. 3. Pratt Young Scholars is a need-based, three-year scholarship providing instruction in art and design with college preparation to motivated high school students. This Scholarship, valued at $7,000, covers three years of studio instruction, all art materials for courses taken, year-round college access program, Summer Scholars courses in July, and guidance throughout the college application process.
4. ArtsConnection Student Art Program Call for Art
Submission Deadline: February 8, 2019
ArtsConnection Student Art Program is seeking art submissions from students in grades 6-12. Art in any medium that can be framed will be accepted into the competition. The Student Art Program curates and mounts student exhibitions in corporate spaces in New York City. There is an opening reception for artists, teachers, and their guests for each show. 5. Girls Who Code
Deadline: Early acceptance deadline is February 15, 2019. Application closes March 15, 2019 (From the website: Apply for a free 7-week introductory computer science program for 10th-11th grade girls going into their junior or senior year of high school. During the 7-week program, participants learn about computer science, gain exposure to tech jobs, and join a sisterhood of girls who are using computer science to become change-makers. Learn more
6. NYU’s Applied Research Innovations in Science and Engineering (ARISE)
Deadline: Late February, 201. From the website: A free program for academically motivated, current 10th and 11th grade New York City Students with a demonstrated interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). This full-time, seven week program includes: a high level, 5 week authentic research experience in participating NYU faculty labs, mentoring in that placement by a graduate or postdoctoral student, a stipend of at least $500 for completing the program, as well as two weeks of workshops, college advisement and other activities geared to preparing ARISE students for the college application process. In the workshops, students will be introduced to the field of scientific ethics, contemporary issues in scientific inquiry, data collection and analysis, research practices, lab safety and more. 7. Student Historian Internship Program
Deadline: February 25th. From the website: Student Historian interns are high school-aged students who use the resources of New-York Historical to conduct exciting research and share their scholarship through creative digital projects. Interns meet with professional staff to learn about careers in the museum, library, and history fields; work collaboratively with fellow students to develop their public speaking and leadership skills; and engage in hands-on work to deepen their understanding of American history and art.
