ADHD Club Reads to Students at The Learning Spring

The ADHD Club’s mission is to fight the stigma of mental health issues, by showing compassion, educating peers, and encouraging conversations about this important issue. Recently, club members visited neighborhood elementary school The Learning Spring, a school designed for children on the autism spectrum, to read aloud and play games with students.

HS Global UN Recap

Sixteen wonderful students from SOF’s Model United Nations team attended the National High School Model UN conference last week with thousands of student delegates from around the United States and the world. NHSMUN is the world’s largest Model UN conference for secondary students.

The SOF team represented the Country of Bangladesh in a simulation of United Nations diplomatic activities. At the conference, held at the Midtown Hilton, students participated in a variety of committees, from the World Bank to the Special Political and Decolonization Committee. During committee sessions, which ran from 8:30am to 11:30pm every day, students participated in debates about important world issues and worked with other delegates to pass resolutions that proposed concrete solutions to address these issues. They attended an in-person visit with diplomatic representatives from Bangladesh at the Permanent Mission to Bangladesh, and attended closing ceremonies at the United Nations headquarters.

Said senior Zahedul Chowdury, who served on the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues:
“It was one of the most eye-opening experiences I’ve ever had in my life. Being in school, it can be hard to see the potential you have – but when I was at MUN, I felt like a real adult, participating in making resolutions that can impact people not only here in America but all over the world. I felt responsible for the future.”

Students who are interested in sharing this amazing experience next year should conduct additional research into the organization at the NHSMUN website (http://www.nhsmun.nyc/), and keep an eye out for recruitment materials from faculty advisors Lauren Murphy and Catherine Thompson, released in September.

Healthy Brain Network thru CMI

child-mind-institute-hbn-logo

The Child Mind Institute is a wonderful organization doing research, education and advocacy around mental health and learning disabilities in children.  They are currently doing a mental health study called ‘The Healthy Brain Network’ and are looking for families to participate in the research.  Participating students will receive a free mental health and learning evaluation as well as compensation for their time.  This is an opportunity to get an otherwise very expensive evaluation from an amazing team.   If you are interested, please contact them to find out more.

SoF Presents She Kills Monsters

 th-1

A comedic romp into the world of fantasy role-playing games, She Kills Monsters tells the story of Agnes Evans as she leaves her childhood home in Ohio following the death of her teenage sister, Tilly. When Agnes finds Tilly’s Dungeons & Dragons notebook, however, she stumbles into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was Tilly’s refuge. In this high-octane dramatic comedy laden with homicidal fairies, nasty ogres, and 90s pop culture, acclaimed young playwright Qui Nguyen offers a heart-pounding homage to the geek and warrior within us all.

Performed by SoF Middle School Students and Directed by Lisa Sobin.
