SOF Global UN
From March 2-5, 2018 eleven students from School of the Future attended the National High School Model United Nations Conference in New York City. Acting as the delegation from Ecuador, students did extensive research to write position papers explaining Ecuador’s stance on issues ranging from crypto-currencies to fertility rates in developing countries. During the four day conference, students debated in United Nations’ committees with delegates representing 193 countries. Participants were from 75 countries and 250 high schools, so this was a wonderful opportunity for our students to meet and work with people from all over the world. The goal of the conference is to provide an authentic opportunity to expand their knowledge of other cultures, share their policy in front of committees that sometimes include hundreds of students, and improve their research and public speaking skills.
Representing School of the Future for the first time at a Model UN Conference were Senior Anika Langberg, Juniors Aicha Cherif and Fredrick Giron-Giesson, and Sophomores Anwesha Dhara, Celina Niemann, Mayo Watanabe, Declan Peterson, Julianna Davis, Isabella Davis, Bushra Mujeeb, and Emily Rodriguez. Even though this conference can be intimidating for first-time students, our students were incredibly enthusiastic and eager to learn the complex procedures and collaborate with students from all of over the world to reach resolutions for the issues they debated. They are already looking forward to next year’s conference!!
