SOF MISSION STATEMENT
At School of the Future (SOF), our philosophy is to promote social justice, critical thinking, and intellectual curiosity through academic education and meaningful inquiry in a caring, AntiRacist environment free from discrimination of any kind. We aim to help every student reach their highest potential through deep, collaborative engagement with both content and their community across grade levels. We encourage students to
become active members of society who can understand and navigate the systems they encounter in order to make positive change. The overwhelming majority of our students go on to college. We encourage students to define success in the broad context of a meaningful life.
Antiracism
SOF is strongly committed to antiracist policies through both words and actions. Our school is part of an educational system and society marked by a long history of racial segregation, unequal distribution of resources, and disenfranchisement. We are committed to dismantling racism by changing systems, policies, practices, and attitudes within our school. We strive to ensure that the culture of the school, our students, faculty, and staff reflect the diversity of NYC. We are committed to ending the “school to prison pipeline” by replacing those school disciplinary practices that disproportionately impact students of color with the practice of restorative justice. We have recently implemented a new grading system that attempts to address inequities and help all students acquire and practice empowering skills within and beyond academic coursework. We endeavor to build school institutions, including the Parent’s Association, the School Leadership team, and student-led organizations that reflect diversity and inclusion. We are committed to building a curriculum within each class and across all content areas that recognizes inequity, disparities, and injustice where it exists.
Social Justice
SOF views social justice as both a process and a goal. We work to build a community in which all students are celebrated for their diverse identities and backgrounds, including race, gender, socio-economic, sexual orientation, ethnicity, language, religion, ability, etc. Our recently-updated admissions process reflects our values. We seek to affirm students' diverse identities in the classroom and through extracurricular activities. We hope our graduates will see the value inherent in diverse and just spaces, and seek, in turn, to foster these same values in society.
Intellectual Curiosity & The Five Habits of Mind
Intellectual Curiosity is foundational to our framework as educators, prompting students to experience the joy of discovering new knowledge, as well as its impact on the world. We teach students to be open to learning about and from the world, to respect the experiences and perspectives of others, and to question their own assumptions and biases.
The Five Habits of Mind, adopted from The Coalition of Essential Schools (CES), inform our pedagogical approach. They encourage students to reason logically, persevere through difficult tasks, and demonstrate creative thinking. They are: assessing significance, making connections, identifying point of view, offering alternatives/suppositions, and selecting and evaluating evidence.
Critical Thinking & Inquiry
SOF views learning as a dynamic process that involves content understanding, inquiry-based research, the achievement and reinforcement of skills, metacognition, and project-based learning. Our approach to teaching seeks to engage, encourage, challenge, and empower students. As a member of the Consortium for Performance Based Assessments, SOF uses Exhibitions in lieu of regents as the core assessment for juniors and seniors. Exhibitions are research papers in Math, Science, History, and English based on topics chosen by the student, which they must complete and present in order to graduate. Starting in 6th grade and continuing through middle and high school, students build skills, stamina, and research tools in order to successfully master these intellectually and creatively rich research projects. The main goals of our curriculum are to guide students to identify their interest, develop the necessary skills to pursue them, and understand the implications and significance of their work. We encourage students to reflect actively on their own work and learning style.
Collaborative Engagement with Content and Community
SOF promotes collaborative engagement among students, staff and parents both inside and outside the classroom. We seek alternative options to the school to prison pipeline, and want our students to think about the world in more empathetic ways. Through weekly, organized circles, and restorative justice practices, we promote conversations between students and staff, nurture student wellbeing, and encourage students to share experiences and thoughts. We believe that all members of our community bring unique personal experiences with them that enhance learning within and beyond the community. The newly implemented Senior Institute Pathways program offers students the opportunity to pursue their passions and provides interest-based classes for Juniors and Seniors to explore options post graduation.

Anti racismo
SOF está fuertemente comprometida con las políticas antirracistas tanto con palabras como con acciones. Justicia social

Compromiso colaborativo con contenido y comunidad
