College and Career
Senior Institute
Eleventh and twelfth grade are critical years as SOF students prepare for college. Our comprehensive college preparation program, Senior Institute, provides students with the guidance, resources, and experiences they need to successfully navigate the college admissions process.
SOF High School College Counselor Felix Shen guides students through the process of researching, selecting, and applying to colleges. Beginning in the spring of junior year and continuing through the fall semester of senior year, students participate in a year-long College Seminar that meets twice each week. The seminar provides individualized support with every aspect of the application process, including developing college lists, completing applications, writing effective personal statements, and preparing supplemental essays.
College-Readiness Coursework
SOF offers a rigorous curriculum designed to prepare students for success in college. Courses include:
- U.S. History
- Equal Justice
- Statistics
- Calculus
- Advanced Placement (AP) courses
These courses are certified by the NYC Department of Education as College Readiness Courses.
College Courses and Dual Enrollment
Students also have opportunities to demonstrate their college readiness by taking college-level courses through programs such as College Now at Baruch College and Hunter College. These courses allow eligible students to earn college credits that may be accepted or transferable through dual enrollment programs.
Students have also taken college courses through Barnard College, Dartmouth College, and Brown University through the Ed Equity program.
College Visits and Admissions Programs
SOF organizes college visits for juniors and seniors throughout New York City and, when conditions allow, to colleges in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C.
Each fall, SOF also welcomes college admissions representatives from institutions across the country. These representatives meet with our eleventh- and twelfth-grade students to provide information about their colleges and the admissions process.

Each year, SOF students are accepted to a wide range of selective colleges and universities. Some of these institutions include:
- Barnard College
